News

Here's the best in founder news from the past few days:

Marc Lou makes $200k from a coding course in a week

Marc Lou has seemingly made $200k in a week from his coding course, CodeFast. (it's also worth pointing out his sales figures haven't been independently verified).

This is going to divide a lot of opinion. He's clearly not the best programmer and he was criticized recently for having some pretty big security gaps in his boilerplate. But that said, the coding skills you need to be a FAANG engineer don't really relate to running a bootstrapped SaaS.

The courses promises you to be up and running in 2 weeks. Do I believe you can learn to code in 2 weeks? Nope. But people have been making coding courses for a very long time now (and they aren't always terribly great developers) What's interesting is Marc's audience seems to want to buy whatever he offers them. And it's a testament to how much money you can make from having over 100,000 social media followers.

Cory Zue on the future of boilerplates and Django

The flip-side of people like Marc Lou making a lot of money from a boilerplate is that the market has experienced a surge of new entrants. So people like Cory Zue, who has a Django boilerplate - SaaS Pegasus (affiliate) - you are also facing more competition and you get lumped into the boilerplate category, which often doesn't have the best reputation.

Cory did a good write-up of his thoughts on this, as well as on the future of Django:

Chat GPT Pro comes out

There's a new $200/month tier for ChatGPT.

It promises unlimted access to the OpenAI o1 model and access to a new model, OpenA1 01 Pro.

I can imagine a lot of heavy users buying this.

Interview with Mubs

I chatted with Mubs, the founder of lots of side projects, including BlueskyDirectory.

We talked about building products for Bluesky, why he hasn't quit his job, how he sees AI affecting coding and why he loves building with Laravel. We talked for over an hour and it was a really fun chat!

SEO tips blueprint

This is honestly a pretty good primer on SEO. (I'm not sure about the AI part though - I still write all my content manually)

I made $650 from Black Friday

Most of this was from selling adverts for this newsletter - one buyer came from Twitter and another came from this newsletter directly. I only made $50 from my info products but that's sort of to be expected as courses usually decline in sales after a launch. It's sort of the reverse of SaaS.

I talked about my plans to update my courses here:
