News

Here's the best in founder news from the past few days:

ImprovMx acquired

Congrats to Antoine for selling ImprovMx, an email forwarding tool.

The product was making $350k a year so I'd estimate they sold for around a million dollars.

It's interesting that he sold it to another bootstrapper who listens to the same podcasts. I think sales like this are easier when you are both in the same community.

WaspJS projects

I came across WaspJS recently - it's an attempt to get the powers of Ruby on Rails inside the JS ecosystem. My friend Cameron is using it a lot - I interviewed him for No CS Degree: https://www.nocsdegree.com/from-recruitment-to-software-engineer/

They have free SaaS templates under the OpenSaaS banner and one person has taken the AI-generated cover letter app, delivered it to a French audience and is making $2k a month from it apparently:

I made the Startup Year Quiz game

I used ChatGPT to help me make a daily "guess the year" type quiz about startups

e.g. guess the year Stripe was created

It loads up a new question each day!

You can play it for free. If you like it, I'd appreciate a share or link back πŸ˜€

Distribution is king

The founder of Lambda School shared a cookbook his grandma had made him.

After lots of people said they would like to buy it, he mades a sales page and got $3200 for his grandma.

Distribution is so more important in business. I'm sure lots of grandmas have excellent recipe cookbooks but most don't have a grandson with a huge social media following to sell them!

Podcast news

It was great to be invited on to the Indie Bites podcast for a chat with James! We talked about loads of things including the state of indie hacking, building in public and this very newsletter you are reading right now!

https://www.petecodes.io/i-was-on-the-indie-bites-podcast-again/

The IndieHackers pod finished up in 2023 and I thought it would it would be good to write a little tribute to some of my favourite episodes!

The Bootstrapped Web podcast is ending after 10 years:

And I just saw that Justin Jackson and Brian Casel are teaming up for a new podcast called The Panel, which is going to be a group show talking about tech issues with nuance. I can't wait!

From $2k to $80k over 7 years

Some great inspirational content from Mohd!

He had a couple of big years when he sold startups like NoCodeApi.

What he didn't mention in this post was that he was originally a blacksmith so he's come a long way!

End notes

I hope you enjoyed the newsletter! Let me know in the replies - I get back to everyone.

Issue #239 Hey! Thanks for signing up to my newsletter for founders. Just a wee reminder - this is all written by an over-caffeinated indie hacker dude in Scotland, not by AI πŸ€– I was reading a business book this week - it's funny how quickly things change. A lot of the apps the author mentioned were no longer operating and there's no mention of AI. Things change fast. LinkedIn help Want to get more attention on LinkedIn?
